Lessons with Ian

Ian believes that every note holds a story and is passionate about you telling your tale. An experienced musical director, multi instrumentalist, accompanist and educator, Ian has worked with hundreds of students both privately and in his role as Course Leader of Musical Theatre within a London university. Ian is a classically trained pianist, reed player and vocal coach who has worked predominantly within Musical Theatre as both a Musical Director and musician since an early age. He teaches both classical and musical theatre genres and most styles in between.

What can you expect from lessons with Ian?

Lessons with Ian will always be fun. Ian is a facilitator who believes that students will learn the most from experiencing the learning rather than being told how they should learn. Whether you embark on your journey for enjoyment, are looking to work through your grades or brush up on your existing skills, Ian will structure each lesson to ensure you gain the most from it.

Piano

Piano/Keyboard

Have you always wanted to play the piano? Are you looking to play for fun, accompany other musicians or work towards graded exams? If the answer is 'yes', Ian can tailor bespoke lessons to suit your individual needs.

Lessons can range from learning how to read and bring music alive from the page to understanding how harmony works and navigating music through the use of chords.

Every lesson is geared towards providing you with what you need to become a more confident pianist.

Woodwind instruments

Woodwind

Ian offers woodwind lessons in:

  • Flute/Piccolo
  • Oboe/Cor Anglais
  • Clarinet/Bass Clarinet
  • Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones

If you're looking to play for fun, or towards graded exams, Ian can help - and you have an accompanist with you!!

As a multi-instrumentalist, Ian has tutored many students who have began their own musical journey on a woodwind instrument before delving into the world of reed doubling.

Music for singing

Singing/Vocal Coaching

As a Musical Director, Ian has vocal coached hundreds of singers throughout his career. Covering all genres of singing, Ian can help you explore all aspects of singing from understanding the mechanics of the sung voice to going beyond and exploring your overall performance.

As a highly skilled pianist, you will always have an accompanist with you during your lessons, so grab the opportunity to record your accompaniments. This also means that you will have an accompanist with you, should you choose to sit graded exams.

Acting Through Song

Acting Through Song/Performance Coaching

Acing Through Song is one of Ian's specialisms and where he feels most at home. What are the differences between singing lessons and developing your skills in acting through song? Some would say the answers can be found in the text.

Ian will challenge your thinking and perceptions of your performance, providing you with an array of options, depending on what you are looking to achieve.

These lessons can be provided in person, or can be taken online.

Music Theory

Music Theory/Orchestration

Looking to pass a music theory exam or wanting to improve your understanding? Interested in learning how to apply these theories into practice by arranging established works or orchestrating your own melodies?

Ian can help with music theory, whether you're looking to expand your knowledge or working towards you music theory exams.

These lessons can be delivered in person, or online.

Music Technology

Music Technology & Keyboard Programming

Looking to create music using technology? Trying to figure out how best to use notation software?

Ian is experienced in using music technology across many platforms. Personally, Ian uses Cubase (DAW), Sibelius (Notation software) and programmes his own synth workstations for performance and can help you in using your own software. A master in keyboard programming, Ian can also help with programming mainstage - but then why spend significant of money on synths such as Kurzweils, Rolands and Yamaha, when they can be programmed?

These lessons can be delivered online, allowing for you to use your own equipment.

“Singing lessons with Ian not only improved my voice and knowledge of how music is constructed, but also hugely improved my confidence”

Marie Duguid

Michael Toolan

“Ian is the true definition of what it means to be a teacher. Not only does he share his mastery of his craft with his students, he meets them where they are and figures out how they learn and has an emphasis in engaging with the students to realise their own potential.”
